While there may be specific obligations for different people and/or agencies, event safety is a shared responsibility and should be a focus for everyone – event organisers, the Government and public. Effective governance structures and event planning will help to ensure this can happen.
The Government gets involved in the events sector by identifying, securing, funding and leveraging events that are internationally significant. This work is led by our New Zealand Major Events team.

Events come in many different sizes and cover a wide range of activities. Whether your event is small or large, there are commonalities in the planning process. As the event organiser, you are responsible for planning the event and ensuring it complies with relevant laws and procedures.
The 36th America’s Cup (AC36) was delivered successfully, at a time when very few other events could take place anywhere in the world because of the global pandemic. Nearly 280,000 people attended the event in person, and the broadcast made Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland and Aotearoa New Zealand look incredible the world over. As an event, AC36 enhanced New Zealand’s reputation as a destination and as a place to host major events.
