The biggest international hockey event for 2011 is coming to New Zealand
New Zealand has won the rights to host hockey’s premier international annual event – the FIH 2011 Men’s Champions Trophy - which will see the world’s top eight teams compete in Auckland from 3-11 December.
With a cumulative television audience estimated at 38 million, it is the first time that New Zealand has held an international hockey event of this scale.
“Auckland welcomes the FIH 2011 Men’s Champions Trophy in December. I’m determined to make Auckland an events destination, and hosting the world’s top eight men’s hockey teams is another huge boost for our region hot on the heels of RWC 2011. In addition to the sporting and media benefits, this event will inject around $1m of new money into our economy. The teams and officials directly involved in the event will generate over 4,000 visitor nights alone,” says Mayor Len Brown.
The International Hockey Federation (FIH) president Leandro Negre says New Zealand will put on a first-rate Champions Trophy. “Hockey is a growing sport in New Zealand and the Black Sticks are consistently performing on the world stage. I know they will do an excellent job as host, they have been extremely flexible and professional,” says Negre.

Government confirms support for Conference Assistance Programme
4 July 2011
The Ministry of Economic Development today announced continued Government support for the valuable Conference Assistance Programme.
Liz MacPherson, Deputy Secretary for the Ministry for Economic Development confirmed the Programme would receive $1.533 million over the next three years from the Major Events Development Fund.
“This important programme remains a critical part of the government’s strategy to attract more high value business events to New Zealand”, said Ms MacPherson.
Since the programme started in 2005, government has invested over $2.3 million with an estimated return of $49 million from international delegates and accompanying partners.
The role of administering the Conference Assistance Programme will move from Conventions & Incentives New Zealand (CINZ) to Tourism New Zealand (TNZ) from 1 July 2011.
“Thanks to the work put in by CINZ, the Conference Assistance Programme has a solid foundation. TNZ are already focussed on the attraction of high value visitors to New Zealand, so by transferring the Conference Assistance Programme and with the support of the sector we can harness the power of the agency responsible for the 100% Pure NZ tourism campaign.”
“This will broaden the reach of the programme, attract more business events and make the Conference Assistance Programme work harder for New Zealand,” said Ms MacPherson.
The Conference Assistance Programme has added significance in the wake of the New Zealand International Convention Centre announcement. The Programme will help New Zealand tap into the growing market of high value business visitors and help make the whole of New Zealand a competitive destination for business events.
Tourism New Zealand Chief Executive, Kevin Bowler welcomed the Conference Assistance Programme on board, “One of our goals at Tourism New Zealand is to attract more high value visitors to New Zealand, and research has clearly shown that conference delegates spend up to three times more a day than other international visitors.”
“We’re looking forward to supporting the Conference Assistance Programme and working with the sector towards our common goal of attracting more business events to New Zealand”.
