Major Events Funding Recipients


2006-2007 Funding

An economic impact of over $275 million was estimated for the 11 major events funded in 2006-2007. A total of $2,769,236 was approved by the MEDF in 2006-2007 to support the following events:

  • A1GP
  • Vodafone X*Air
  • Lindauer Queenstown Winter Festival
  • Auckland Festival
  • World Netball Championships
  • World Veterans Table Tennis Champs Bid
  • Winter Games NZ

  • World Championship Sailing Regatta

Examples of Major Events Supported

Below are some more detailed examples of major events that have previously been granted funding by New Zealand Major Events.

New Zealand International Arts Festival

The New Zealand International Arts Festival is New Zealand's iconic and largest multi arts event. It has provided work for thousands of New Zealand artists, including writers, sculptors, dancers, singers and actors. The New Zealand International Arts Festival provides the opportunity for New Zealanders to experience amazing performances on an international standing.

A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, New Zealand Round

The A1GP concept is based on a World Cup style of motorsport, involving teams representing nations in identical cars.Taupo Motorsport Park hosted New Zealand's A1GP World Cup of Motorsport event in 2007 and 2008. The estimated economic return for the 2008 event is approximately a $25million contribution to the national GDP.There are considerable business to business opportunities that reside behind A1GP. The A1GP event also brings significant international exposure for New Zealand. The 2007 event was filmed and broadcast live to a global audience of approximately 7.4 million viewers around the world.

World Netball Championships 2007

The 2007 World Netball Championships were held in Auckland from 10-17 November 2007. The World Netball Championships brought together 16 international teams from five regions for 10 days of competition. Netball is a very high profile sport in New Zealand and  holding the world Championships here was extremely significant. The event was estimated to contribute over $12million to the national GDP.

Queenstown Winter Festival

The Queenstown Winter Festival started in 1974 and is New Zealand's longest running winter event. The Festival includes a line-up of over 60 events including a host of music, comedy and entertainment alongside some daring downtown antics and loads of mountain mayhem.The event contributes approximately $16million to the national GDP.

Pinot Noir 2007

Pinot Noir 2007 was a celebration of all things Pinot Noir combined with superb, high quality cuisine and entertainment. The event was held in Wellington in January - February 2007 and attracted the wine industry, media and commentators and Pinot lovers from around New Zealand and the world. 891 people attended Pinot Noir 2007 including 238 international attendees and 45 international media.

UCI Mountain Bike and Trials World Championships 2006

The UCI Mountainbike and Trials World Championships was a hugely successful event held in Rotorua in August 2006. The Championships covered the disciplines of cross-country, downhill, trials and four cross. There were 538 riders from 36 countries. 40,000 spectators attended over six days with an additional 1818 accredited visitors including 246 media. The event contributed $21.1million to the national GDP.
