The Criteria
Driving the criteria for funding support decisions is the Major Events National Strategy. The strategy provides a plan to support the government's involvement in events. It aims to improve coordination across the agencies actively supporting events and ensure events generate an appropriate return on investment for the funding provided.
Strategy Focus
The strategy focuses activity on:
- keeping existing sustainable events in New Zealand
- growing new and existing events
- attracting new major events to New Zealand
Key Industry Issues
The future shape of the events industry will be heavily influenced by how well the industry responds to a number of key issues. The IAEG has identified as a priority the need for:
- better coordination of event organiser activities
- a more sophisticated process for seeking and winning major events
- a reduction in duplication of effort by organisers and government agencies
- a reduction in competition among New Zealand destinations for the same events
- better use of available infrastructure, including natural assets
- more high quality, high yield events
- more events in low and shoulder seasons
- the pooling of resources to improve efficiency
- an improvement in standards
- research to gain greater depth and understanding of the industry
Funding Criteria
The strategy sets out criteria under which events will be considered for support:
- Economic criteria, favouring events that:
- generate impact or add value to regional and national economies
- create employment
- increase tourist opportunities
- Social and cultural criteria, favouring events that:
- develop or promote high achievement for New Zealanders in the arts, cultural, heritage, sporting and leisure fields
- provide opportunities for New Zealanders to experience world-class events
- enable communities to showcase their regions and achievements nationally and internationally
- International exposure criteria, favouring events that:
- enhance international media exposure

- Environmental Sustainability
