Application Steps

The Inter Agency Events Group (IAEG) has recently changed the application process to enable a more effective evaluation of events projects and to facilitate a more user friendly application procedure.

The application process now consists of two annual funding rounds with two stages in each. Please note that the assessment and decision making process takes approximately 3 months from the delivery of a comprehensive proposal by applicants.

Prepare your application before submitting your online Stage One application. Read the Preparing your Application for instructions and requirements.

  1. You complete the Concept Proposal template and submit it electronically to majorevents@med.govt.nz.
  2. We send you a letter telling you we've received your application.
  3. We process your application – this may involve us contacting you to seek further information.
  4. The Agency Advisory Group (a sub-group of the IAEG) meets to compare your application with all those received for the current round, and to select those that will progress to Stage Two. This meeting for the Autumn Round will take place on 18 March 2010 and for the Spring Round on 2 September 2010.
  5. You are notified as to whether or not you have been selected to progress to Stage Two. At this point you will also be informed of the detailed requirements for Stage Two.
  6. You submit your stage two application in both electronic and hard copy form.
  7. New Zealand Major Events prepares a briefing note on their recommendation for the IAEG meeting - this may involve us contacting you to seek further information.
  8. The IAEG meets to consider all applications in the current round.
  9. The IAEG makes recommendations to the Minister of Economic Development who makes the final decision. 
  10. We advise you of the decision.
  11. If approved, we prepare and agree on a contract with you.
  12. You provide regular reports to New Zealand Major Events.
  13. We monitor your event preparation and staging.
  14. We pay you on receipt of your invoice(s) at agreed contract milestones.
  15. You provide a post-event report.
  16. We evaluate the success of our funding decision.

Key dates for the Spring 2009 funding round are:

  • Monday 16 August - stage one applications must be received by 11.59pm
  • Thursday 2 September - Agencies Advisory Group meet to make decisions on stage one applications
  • Monday 11 October - stage two applications must be received in electronic form by 11.59pm
  • Thursday 18 November - IAEG meets to make decisions on stage two applications
