Value of Major Events

[ Last Updated 10 September 2007 ]

The excitement of the FIFA Under 17 Women's World Cup, the World Netball Championships and the NZ international Arts Festival- such events have helped build New Zealand's reputation as a world-class major event destination.

It's a reputation worth building.

The total value of the major event industry is hard to accurately calculate. An event such as the World Netball Championships provided fantastic benefits to the country including a contribution of over $12 million to the national GDP and a fantastic legacy of social and cultural benefits.

More Than Dollar Spend

The economic impact can't be assessed by dollar spend alone, with benefits often realised years after the event. Such benefits can include:

  • a higher profile for New Zealand, which then allows us to showcase products, develop connections and build business, cultural, sporting and tourism opportunities.
  • a better quality of life for New Zealanders, through environmental and infrastructure improvements, increased employment opportunities before, during and after the event, and greater opportunities to participate.
  • building a stronger sense of identity in the community - locally  regionally, nationally.
  • developing and promoting high achievement for New Zealanders in the arts, cultural, sports, heritage and leisure fields
  • providing opportunities for New Zealanders to experience world class events
  • Enabling communities to showcase their regions and achievements nationally and internationally.
