What Are Major Events?

[ Last Updated 10 September 2007 ]

Events inject a positive spark and motivate individuals, businesses and communities. They give us the opportunity to celebrate; to share creativity and culture; to test sporting skill; to showcase our dramatic landscape.

Events also play an important role in cementing our place on the world stage. International visitors, especially, are vital in building New Zealand's economic prosperity. Events are one way we attract them here.

And New Zealand has a lot to offer, with events of all nature and size, from the small and local to the major and national. The Major Events Development Fund focuses on major events that produce significant economic and social benefits for New Zealand.

Generally, to be considered for New Zealand Major Events support, a major event must:

  • be of a size requiring government agency involvement
  • attract a large number of international participants or visitors and therefore generate significant tourism opportunities
  • significantly raise New Zealand's profile
  • require a high level of professional management and coordination
  • attract large numbers of New Zealanders, either as participants or visitors
  • offer considerable cultural, social, economic or other benefits.

Not Just Here In New Zealand…

Events don't have to be held here in New Zealand to be eligible for support from New Zealand Major Events. But if they're held off-shore they must produce the same high level of benefits for New Zealand.
