The Government Role

Why is the Government Involved?
Major events can generate significant economic benefits for businesses, industries and communities. Sometimes government assistance is needed to best capture these benefits.
New Zealand has the raw ingredients, it has the talent and it has a growing track record. The Government recognises there is considerable value in ensuring New Zealand remains competitive on the world stage and that it has a key role to play in retaining, growing and attracting major events.
Growing New Zealand
The Government established the Major Events Development Fund to support events in line with its strategic goals, in particular, the delivery of long-term sustainable growth necessary to improve the quality of life of all New Zealanders. To help achieve this, the Government's involvement in the events sector is focused on encouraging major events that:
- showcase the country's unique visual appeal and landscape, its business, its culture or its sport
- appeal to New Zealanders and stimulate their sense of pride
- extend the tourist season to the low and shoulder periods
- offer a direct return on investment through tourism, promotion of New Zealand business or other means
- are achievable, sustainable and affordable, and can be accessed by a wide range of communities and groups
- provide a springboard for other initiatives
- have high international prestige and will generate positive media coverage in key markets.
